“Call the Dogs” exhibit at South x Southeast Photo Gallery

December 8, 2024

A big thank you, Elizabeth Avedon. You made Oona’s Day. (And mine!) Oona is running in circles with the wonderful news that “Boat House” will be in the exhibit “Call the Dogs” at the sxsegallery. Online mid December through mid February. Photos are all for sale. Many thanks to Nancy McCrary, Publisher/Founding Editor, for her commitment to the sxsegallery.com

This photograph is part of a series captured during the quiet isolation of COVID at my husband's family camp. In the same cabin where generations of his family had slept, I reflected on their physical similarities and their bond to this place. What does it feel like to inherit such a deep connection to land and history? And for those displaced, what is lost in the absence of such rootedness? This series explores the tension between memory, legacy, and the fragility of connection to place.

Lenscratch Feature: The Lobster Girls

(now titled Sea Change)

March 2022

I invite you to see my project The Lobster Girls and an interview with me featured on Lenscratch. Link is HERE. Many thanks to Aline Smithson for guiding me through the past year to work on completion of this project and for posting it on Lenscratch.

A big thank you to Jennifer Pritchard for interviewing me and encouraging my thoughts and writing.

A rural fishing community of Eastern Canada inspired me to photograph seventeen girls annually holding a lobster, assembling two to six portraits of each one. This tidal landscape and shifting light of the Bay of Fundy elevate the fleeting nature of the stages of girlhood.  By creating this series, I study identity and femininity and how family, local culture and the pervasive influences of society at large manifest themselves in each girl over time.

Pictura Gallery Blog Feature: Crustaceans
(now titled Sea Change)

January 2020

I’m really thrilled to have this great feature! From the text:

“I am absolutely in love with Susan Lapides’ project “Crustaceans.” This work features portraits of young girls and teens holding lobsters. Yes, you heard me correctly- portraits of young girls and teens holding lobsters. Never in a million years would I have imagined that such an unlikely pairing would steal my heart. First and foremost, this series is sweetly and delightfully funny. However, the success of the work doesn’t just rest in its humor. Lapides has managed to create a series whose premise is simple, and yet, has an unexpectedly nuanced emotional depth.”

Lenscratch Feature: Crustaceans (now titled Sea Change)

June 2019

I am delighted to announce that my Crustaceans series is featured on the highly respected Lenscratch online photo journal with a beautiful introduction by the editor, photographer, mentor, and friend, Aline Smithson:

“These portraits capture a modernized Venus in the Clamshell pose against a watery backdrop where we witness the changing physicality and posture of her subjects. She challenges them to hold a live lobster as they present themselves to the camera–it’s in the subtle gestures of how they hold the crustacean that reveal parts of their personalities, changing as they grow older.”
